Nursing Education & Training

Nurses contribute to trauma care across the patient's pathway and there are several educational initiatives and resources available to reflect this from the front door in the Emergency Department right through to discharge.

Major Trauma Nurse Practitioner Shifts

Band 6 and Band 7 nurses from across the pathway are invited to spend time shadowing the Major Trauma Nurse Practitioners (MTNP) at the Major Trauma Centre.

MTNP are specialist senior nurses who share a mixed background of ED and ICU training. They work across the entire patient journey from trauma call in ED through their stay in ICU (if needed) and the ward to discharge. They see all the new major trauma patients that have been admitted in the last 24hours and complete daily ward rounds of inpatients, completing physical assessments and coordinating repatriations and discharges.

Those who join will work alongside one of our team seeing new patients who have been admitted in the last 24 hours on the wards. This will be an opportunity to observe MTNP undertaking Tertiary Survey. You will also attend the Major Trauma MDT meeting first thing which is an opportunity to review all scans and discuss/plan for patients across specialities. We will also try to get you down to ED to observe a trauma call in the Emergency Department should a call come in.

Emergency Trauma Care Course

This is an exciting initiative with collaborative working between St Georges University London (SGUL) and SWL&ST Network. The Emergency Trauma Care Course (ETCC) has been designed for Band 6 or Band 7 registered nurses working in Major Trauma Centres and Trauma Units that are directly involved in the emergency care of polytrauma patients and is mapped to the National Major Trauma Nursing Group (NMTNG) Level 2 Competencies.

This course aims to enable the participant to:

  • Develop their clinical assessment skills in the poly trauma patient and develop their critical decision-making ability
  • Provide registered nurses with the essential specialist knowledge to manage the poly trauma patient
  • Provide registered nurses with the clinical skills and understanding of the associated risks and complications of these interventions and how to recognise and manage them
  • Provide registered nurses with the ability and skills to critically evaluate and develop service provision to this group of patients

The course utilises a blended learning approach. The theoretical component is delivered online via Canvas (hosted by SGUL) using various teaching resources. Candidates must pass the consolidation MCQ quiz before attending 2 on-site days for clinical skills development and assessment through an Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE).
